Zhangjiajie is a forest of stone: around three thousand pillars of quartz sandstone rising to three hundred metres, with pines growing on their tops and cloud moving between them. The Chinese have painted these mountains for centuries and a film borrowed them for a floating world. The park puts paths along the cliff edges, a glass lift up one face and cable cars over the ridges, and the neighbouring canyon has a glass-floored bridge that people cross on their hands and knees.
What the model says
Spring and autumn. April and May bring warm days and the mist that makes the pillars float; October brings the clearest air and the autumn colour. Summer is hot, wet and crowded, winter is cold and often closed by ice on the paths. The Monte Carlo run flags the two national holiday weeks as the real risk here: not weather, but queues that eat a day. Daylight is unremarkable at thirty degrees north; the first bus at six thirty is the whole trick.
What the ground says back
Comfort is high and cost is low; this is the easiest place in the otherworld realm. The difficulty is the ticket apps and the crowds, and both yield to a hotel by the gate and an early start. The mist is a condition rather than a problem: it closes the cable cars for an hour and then opens the pillars one by one. The glass bridge is a spectacle and the pillars at dawn are the reason to come.

Three days for the park and the canyon, four with a buffer or a second sector. Hunan pairs the pillars with Fenghuang, the old river town, for a week.

Getting there
Fly or take the train to Zhangjiajie city, then the bus to the Wulingyuan gate. The park ticket lasts four days and covers the internal buses; the Bailong lift, the cable cars and the glass bridge in the neighbouring Grand Canyon are separate tickets. A guide is not needed; a translation app and an early start are.

Avoid July and August: 32°C, the summer crowds and thunderstorms; the Chinese national holidays in early October and early May triple the queues.
Questions people ask
Is it really the Avatar landscape?
The film’s floating mountains were modelled on these pillars; the park renamed one of them. The place is more strange and more real than the film.
Do I need a guide?
No. The park is signposted in English and the buses run every few minutes. A hotel near the gate and an early start are worth more than a guide.
How crowded is it?
Very, from mid morning at the famous viewpoints, and impossibly so on national holidays. Dawn and the further sectors are quiet.

What a buffer day is worth
The day you did not book is the one that decides whether you see the thing. Fog in Greenland, a convoy in the Danakil, a ferry in the Faroes, the alert level on a volcano: A Thousand Trips puts a number on the spare day, and the number is large.
