Canopy

The deep Amazon by boat from Cusco, the oldest rainforest on earth in Borneo, and an hour with mountain gorillas in a forest on the edge of the Rift. Heat, humidity and the patience the canopy demands.

Rainforests do not have weather in the way the other realms do; they have a rain day every second day and thirty degrees, and what changes is you. The Pack Simulator is the tool for this realm because the trip is decided by what you carry: long sleeves, leech socks, a dry bag, a head net, the vaccinations, and the willingness to be wet from seven in the morning.

The three forests are chosen for their animals: giant otters and macaws in Manu, orangutans in Danum, gorillas in Bwindi. All three are reached only with operators and guides, which is how the forests have survived.

The animal you would cross the world for

Questions people ask

Which forest first?

Danum Valley: a lodge with a canopy walkway, three hours from an airport, three nights. Bwindi is a permit and a long road; Manu is a week and a boat.

How bad are the insects?

Constant and manageable with cover, repellent and nets. Leeches in Borneo are a nuisance, not a danger; mosquitoes in the Amazon are the reason for the prophylaxis.

Will I see the animals?

Gorillas, yes, by the design of the permit. Otters and macaws in Manu, near certain in the dry season. Orangutans in Danum, likely in three days. Jaguars, a rumour.

The Simulation Brief

One place, one simulator, one honest number. Every second Sunday.

No newsletter theatre. A short e-mail with the place we modelled, what the model said and what the ground said back.
