Polar daylight: what 24-hour sun does to a schedule
Above the Arctic Circle the day is a variable that can take any value from zero to twenty-four hours, and it changes by the week. Here is what the geometry does, what it does to sleep, and how the Daylight Simulator turns it into a plan.

The Sermeq Kujalleq glacier pushes forty metres of ice a day into a fjord that traps the bergs for months. The town of Ilulissat sits at its mouth, sled dogs on every slope, the midnight sun on the ice.

Sermeq Kujalleq is one of the fastest-moving glaciers on earth, and its ice ends up in a fjord with a shallow bar at the mouth that traps the largest bergs for months. The result is a sixty-kilometre corridor of ice the size of buildings, grinding slowly towards Disko Bay, with a town of five thousand people and twice as many sled dogs on the shore. The icefjord is a UNESCO site, and unusually for one, you can walk to it from your hotel in half an hour.
What the model says
Two seasons again. June to September is the light season: the midnight sun from late May to late July, open water for boats and kayaks, temperatures from five to twelve degrees with a wind off the ice that feels colder. March and April are the sled season, when the sea ice holds and the dogs work. The Daylight Simulator shows something the brochures do not: in September the days shorten by half an hour a week, and by the equinox the aurora is back.
What the ground says back
Fog is the fact of life. It grounds the flights and the helicopters, sometimes for two days, and the plan that works has a buffer day at each end. The bergs are bigger and louder than any photograph suggests, and the etiquette is simple: keep your distance on the water and never stand on the shore below a berg that could roll. The trails along the fjord rim are the best free thing in the Arctic.
Days
Four days is the minimum with the buffer. Five gives you the glacier front at Eqi, which is a full day by boat. A week in Greenland pairs Ilulissat with Nuuk or the south, but the icefjord is the reason to come.

What can go wrong
- ▲▲▲IcebergsBergs roll and calve without warning; small boats keep two berg lengths away and so should you on the shore.

- ▲▲ColdEven in July the wind off the fjord is a winter wind; bring a shell and gloves.

Getting there
Since 2024 there are direct summer flights from Copenhagen; otherwise via Kangerlussuaq or Nuuk. In town everything is walkable; the fjord is reached by the boardwalk to Sermermiut or by boat from the harbour.

Permits None for the town and the boardwalk. Boats, helicopters and dog sleds are booked with local operators.
Avoid October and November: dark, wet and the sea ice not yet safe.
Questions people ask
Do I need a tour to see the icebergs?
No. The boardwalk from town reaches the fjord in half an hour and the rim trails run for hours. The boats add the view from the water and are worth one afternoon.
How do I get there?
Summer direct flights from Copenhagen, otherwise via Nuuk. Fog closes the airport regularly, so never book a tight connection home.
Is it expensive?
Yes. Budget the mid band unless you self-cater; the bergs themselves cost nothing.

What a buffer day is worth
The day you did not book is the one that decides whether you see the thing. Fog in Greenland, a convoy in the Danakil, a ferry in the Faroes, the alert level on a volcano: A Thousand Trips puts a number on the spare day, and the number is large.
