Volcano etiquette
Standing at the rim of something active is safer than it looks and more dangerous than it feels, and the difference is a short set of rules that the guides know and the visitors forget. Alert levels, wind, the line, and what the fatalities had in common.

Yasur has been erupting more or less continuously for at least eight hundred years. James Cook steered towards its glow in 1774 and it has not stopped since. The cone is only 361 metres high and a 4x4 can drive to within ten minutes of the rim, which makes it the most accessible active volcano on earth, and the custom owners of the mountain have turned that into a living. The island around it is black-sand coast, kava villages and jungle, an hour of rough road from the airstrip.
What the model says
The dry season, May to October, is the window: highs in the mid twenties, ten to fourteen rain days a month, and outside the cyclone months. From November to April the model flags two risks at once: storms that shut the island down for days and the heavier rain that turns the cross-island road into a river bed. The volcano itself has no season but has an alert level, published daily, and the plan hinges on it.
What the ground says back
Dusk is the hour. In daylight you see the crater and the ash plain; in the dark you see the fire, and the sound arrives through your feet before your ears. The eruptions come every few minutes, some no more than a cough, some a fountain that lights the whole crater. The guides move you around the rim as the wind moves the plume, and the only rule is to be where they are. Vanuatu logistics are slow and cash-based, and the internal flight is the weak link of the plan.
Days
Two days is enough for the rim and the coast. Three gives a second visit, which you will want, and a buffer for the flight. Vanuatu pairs Tanna with Espiritu Santo’s blue holes and wreck diving for a two-week trip.

What can go wrong
- ▲▲▲Volcanic bombsAt alert level two and above the rim closes; at level one bombs can still land beyond the lip. Stand where the guides stand.

Getting there
International flights to Port Vila from Australia, New Zealand, Fiji or New Caledonia, a domestic hop to Tanna, then an hour of rough road across the island to the ash plain. The village that owns the volcano sells the permit and drives you to the crater car park; the rim is a ten minute walk.

Permits Volcano access fee paid to the custom owners at the gate; access depends on the alert level published daily by the geohazards service.
Avoid January to March is cyclone season; flights, boats and the volcano access all close at short notice.
Questions people ask
How close do you get?
To the rim itself, at alert level one. The crater floor is a few hundred metres below and the vents throw material well above the rim; guides position you by the wind.
Is it dangerous?
Visitors have been killed by bombs in the past, in every case beyond the safe line. Follow the guides, respect the alert level, and it is safer than the road to get there.
When is the best time?
May to October: dry, cooler and outside cyclone season. The volcano itself does not have a season.

What a buffer day is worth
