Raja Ampat sits at the heart of the Coral Triangle, where three oceans’ currents meet, and the result is the richest reef on the planet: more than fifteen hundred fish species, three quarters of the world’s coral species, mantas at cleaning stations, walking sharks in the shallows. Above the water fifteen hundred karst islets rise out of turquoise lagoons like a drowned mountain range, and from the viewpoints at Piaynemo and Wayag they look arranged. Sorong is the gateway, two flights from Jakarta, and the boat is the plan.

What the model says

A calm season from October to April, with the mantas and the flat crossings, and a trade-wind season from June to September when the swell moves the liveaboards elsewhere. Temperature never changes: thirty degrees in the air, twenty-eight in the water, rain every second day in short bursts. The equatorial day is fixed at twelve hours. What the ground says back

The current is the reef’s engine and the diving’s difficulty; reef hooks and drift briefings are the norm and the guides are excellent. The remoteness is real, the nearest chamber is far, and the profiles are conservative for that reason. Homestays on Kri and Arborek have become a serious alternative for people who want the strait and not the whole archipelago. The connections through Jakarta or Makassar need a spare day in each direction.

Days

Seven days is the shortest liveaboard that reaches the north or the south; ten covers both. Homestays work from four days. Indonesia pairs Raja Ampat with Komodo in the other season, which is how the boats do it too.

What can go wrong

Getting there

Fly to Sorong via Jakarta or Makassar, then either a liveaboard for seven to twelve nights or the ferry to Waisai and a homestay or resort on the islands. Liveaboards reach the far north at Wayag and the south at Misool; homestays put you on one reef at a fraction of the price.

Permits Marine park entry tag, valid a year, bought in Sorong or Waisai; the fee funds the patrols that keep the reef intact.

Avoid July and August: the roughest seas, and most liveaboards move to Komodo.

Questions people ask

Do I need to dive?

No. The snorkelling in the Dampier Strait is the best on earth, mantas included, and the viewpoints and lagoons are above water. The liveaboards are built for divers; the homestays welcome both.

Liveaboard or homestay?

A liveaboard reaches Wayag and Misool and does three or four dives a day. A homestay stays in the central strait, costs a fraction and is quieter. Both see the reef that made the name.

How much current?

Enough to make reef hooks standard. The currents feed the fish and the guides know the tides; drifting past a wall of barracuda is the point.
