Rainforests, gorillas, otters on an oxbow lake. You have the patience the animals demand and the tolerance for sweat, leeches and a bunk at a field station.

First place: Danum Valley, Borneo

The Canopy travels for animals and accepts the odds. You pack long sleeves and leech socks without being told, you book three nights where others book one, and you have learned to walk slowly and stop often. Your risk is the calendar: the wet season, the vaccination you left too late, the single night that gives the forest no chance.
