Okavango Delta

The Okavango is a river with no sea: it rises in the Angolan highlands, flows south-east into the Kalahari and spreads into a delta of channels, islands and lagoons before it evaporates. The flood arrives months after the rain that made it, in the middle of the dry southern winter, and the animals of northern Botswana gather on it: elephants in the thousands, lions that swim, wild dogs, hippos in every lagoon. The camps are islands reached by light aircraft, unfenced, and expensive by national policy.

What the model says

June to October, with the flood at its height in July and August and the heat building to October. Days in the high twenties, dawns at five degrees on an open vehicle, no rain at all. The green season from December to March is the reverse: rain, dispersed animals, birds, half the price. The Budget Simulator shows the widest band on this site: the mokoro day from Maun and the top camps are the same delta at a twentieth of the cost.

What the ground says back

The camps run on rules learned over decades: escorts after dark, no walking alone, and a respect for whatever is standing outside the tent at three in the morning. Two camps in different parts of the delta are the right shape for a trip, because the water decides what is where. The mokoro through the papyrus is the quiet heart of it, and the poler’s reading of the channels for hippo is the skill that keeps it quiet.

Days

Four days for two camps, six for three, plus Maun at each end. Botswana pairs the delta with Chobe’s elephants and the Victoria Falls across the border for a ten-day loop, and the mobile safaris do all three at a third of the price.
